Departmental Aims
Our aims
To initiate and maintain lasting pupil curiosity, interest and enjoyment in their foreign languages.
To create an atmosphere where pupils wish to learn because they are active participants in their learning and where staff
enjoy teaching and give their best.
To enable pupils to become familiar with a body of knowledge, grammatical principles, skills and vocabulary in their foreign
languages. A thorough grasp of these principles will allow pupils to maximize attainment.
To see foreign languages as part of a wider body of knowledge e.g. memory skills, inference or scanning text for
information.
To encourage pupils to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as politeness, perseverance, initiative,
confidence and independence.
To enable pupils to work independently and as part of a team in a variety of activities in order to develop core skills such as
Listening and Reading for information and Writing and Speaking in their foreign languages.
To employ teaching methods and resources which allow all pupils, irrespective of background, gender or ability, to have
equal access to their foreign languages and to experience success and enjoyment in their work.
To value each individual and so encourage each pupil to feel the value and worth of others.
To develop an awareness in pupils of the implications of foreign languages for the individual and the local community.
To encourage positive attitudes to learning foreign languages and to speakers of those languages and a sympathetic
approach to other cultures.
